I am Brenda, an intensive care nurse with a decade of experience at a community hospital in Maryland. Recently, in November 2023, I completed my master's degree as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. As the founder of Critically Caring, I am dedicated to advocating for mental wellness. Beyond my professional pursuits, I am a proud pet parent to two adorable pit bulls named Whiskey and Willow, and soon, I will also embrace motherhood to a baby girl. Through Critically Caring, I aim to contribute to destigmatizing mental health and fostering greater awareness and support.
I've come to the realization that in this post-COVID world we are living in the majority of healthcare workers, and people in general- are burnt out. I've realized more than ever that mental health and self-care is just as important as physical health and that caring for ourselves is just as important as caring for our patients. I know so many healthcare professionals and professionals in other intense careers who have run themselves into the ground and run themselves dry and I wanted to do something to try and help fix the problem and let people know they are not alone.
As mentioned above, the initial thought was that healthcare workers are burnt out, then I realized, everyone is burnt out, and everyone deserves compassion. The focus of Critically Caring is to focus on caring for burn out and normalizing mental health and self-care for everyone. The main population who was initially served by Critically Caring was the medical profession as well as patients and families but the goal is to help and reach as many people regardless of their profession.
Critically Caring is focused on improving and focusing on self care and mental health as well as normalizing talking about emotions. My personal opinion is that the majority of us are exhausted and burnt out in this post COVID world. One way that has been proven to help manage stressors is to journal. Critically Caring provides guided journals with promts and blank pages to help people decompress. Critically Caring is focused in self-care, positive self talk, giving yourself grace, understanding and normalizing emotions that are felt as well as provide resources for anyone having a hard time.
Coming from a medical backgroiund, I've also realized that we pour so much of ourselves into our patients while we're caring for them and pour so much into the family during their stay in the hospital, then if the patient passes away and our care is essentially over. I wanted to change that. I wanted to provide compassion to the families after the patients death. I have patients who still live in my heart, and families I still think about. I wanted to provide some care to the family after the patient's passing, to let the family know that their family member meant something to the medical team and wasn't just another number. The critical CARE cards help provide an essence of closure for the health care staff as well as a form of therapy and coping and also provide care to the family after a patient's passing.
